Craig Says: “I had been unemployed for some time and had been giving some thought to what I wanted to do. I didn’t fancy a normal day-job and was looking for a career. I knew the owner of a local flooring business was looking for a trainee with some experience. I am good at practical skills and so I enrolled on a 3-day carpet fitting course. The course was great, and I started work with the shop the following week.”

Mike Turner of Carpet Point completed a Domestic Carpet Fitting Course with the UKFA

Mike says: “I have owned and run my own carpet shop for 15 years but have found it increasingly difficult to find good fitters.
I decided to take a fitting course in order to carry out some work myself when we are busy. Despite my experience I was amazed how much I learned on the course. Not only am I now able to fit carpets if need be, but when I am estimating, I have a much better understanding of potential fitting problems and how to deal with them. I think the course is ideal for people in the trade who want to increase their expertise.”

David Finnimore of Exeter set up his own business

Dave says: “Although I have been employed in a regular job I have always been handy and have often fitted laminate flooring for friends and family. When I was made redundant, I decided to use the opportunity to set up in business and I enrolled on a carpet fitting course with the UKFA to broaden my skills. The course was very informative and certainly worth doing. I have been trading for a while now and things are going well. Although I am better known for laminate I often get asked for carpet at the same time, and I was able to put my training to good use from the start. I would certainly recommend the courses”.

   Why Become a Fitter ?

Together with carpet shops, wholesalers and manufacturers, carpet fitters and floor layers

are part of the back-bone of the British flooring industry!

There are many reasons why people consider a career as a carpet fitter: job satisfaction, high £££ earnings, variety and a chance to escape a boring occupation are just a few.

No matter if you are working in Ships, Shops or Show homes, anyone who enjoys developing their practical skills will be happy as a flooring fitter. Just  imagine the advantages of managing your own time, working at your own speed and experiencing the satisfaction of seeing the finished job. Although there are jobs available working with existing fitters or shops, most carpet fitters work on a self employed basis, either working direct for the public or contracting to other businesses such as large carpet retail chains. Carpet fitters are also in demand in other countries such as Canada and Australia.
